The first opening scene to a movie can tell a lot either about the plot, the main character or the villain itself. It can reveal what kind of movie it will be, For example, in the Movie 'Scream' the opening scene shows a woman being tormented over the phone by what we all would believe to be the killer/villain of the movie. It also shows what kind of movie its likely to be in so far as this killer seems as though he enjoy's 'toying' with the people before he inevitibly kills them. It also tells us that the movie isn't paranormal or anything considered 'out of the norm' but instead a slasher film with a psychopath.
Scream
The Conjuring
The opening to the scene has no visual imagery and just audio, the people speaking are describing something, however because at the time it has no visuals it leaves it up to the viewer to imagine what it is that they're describing. However, this i only for a few seconds as it then shows the people who are talking about the doll. This opening already reveals to the viewer that this is going to be a scary film as it has very dark lighting along with the camera zooming in on the dolls face to show that it is definitely a horror movie.
Sinister
The opening scene to Sinister starts of with a black screen and ominous music playing in the background, this continues for about five seconds before it shows four people with nooses around their necks but they are still on the floor. This continues for about thirty seconds before you see a mechanism on the right of the screen cutting a branch. The branch eventually falls pulling the people up, this reveals to the viewer that the main villain of the movie is smoking of psychopath.
The Woman In Black
The opening scene to The Woman In Black really shows the audience the type of atmoshpere that the movie has. For the first thirty seconds every thing is positive even with the creepy and ominous music in the background, however there is i sudden shift in mood and tension when all three children look into thecorner of the room in unison. Followed by this the children stand up and walk towards the window in a slow-motion but not slowed down very much, this along with the children stand on and breaking the toys they were just playing with seconds ago it kind of hints that the villian or the antagonist in the movie is some kind of evil entity as it seems to influence the three children too jump out the window. Its lastly backed up in the opening scene that its a horror movie when you here a very generic shreek of terror coming from off camera confirming that the three kids likely died from the fall.
